Microblogging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, encountered a significant technical glitch around 11 am on Thursday, 21st Dec 2023. Both the website and the mobile application displayed the message ‘Welcome to your timeline’ instead of the usual tweets on users’ feeds, indicating a widespread outage that left the platform inaccessible.
Downdetector recorded over 70,000 reports of users being unable to use the platform, with no immediate information available on the cause of the issue.
Past Downtime issue with X
This outage is not an isolated incident for X, as the Elon Musk-owned platform experienced downtime in both March and July of the current year. Downdetector reported over 13,000 instances of X being down in the US and the UK in July. Users reported encountering a message that read, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments, then try again.”
Similarly, on March 6, the platform faced disruptions for a few hours. Numerous users reported difficulty using the platform normally and experienced issues accessing links, images, and videos. This outage impacted thousands of users, with reports from some regions indicating that the website was slower than usual.
